Restaurant Profile – The Mexican Port Douglas

The Mexican in Port Douglas has been a local favourite since the early 1990’s. Going through various incarnations including Chief’s to Tortilla’s Cucina Mexicana through the early 2000’s, the style of food changed, the people changed – even the big ol’ cactus out front passed away.

However, one thing has remained the same for the humble Mexican eatery in tropical North Queensland, the locals of Port Douglas call it The Mexican.

The Mexican was founded in 2015 by husband-and-wife team Jon and Sarah Lovett. They pride themselves on their love for this region and have several years of local and international hospitality experience. What they’ve done with the new Mexican is brought a little casual funk and soul to the Port Douglas dining scene.

Jon started using Diego’s products five years ago and says the product stands out from other brands.

“Initially we were using products from a large international brand, but felt they lacked the quality and consistency we were looking for,” Jon says.

“Diego’s are a family business just like us, and once trying their product we never looked back.

“They have a commitment to producing an authentic range of products that paired with our cuisine perfectly.

“Diego’s is a great company to partner with and they have always been there to help us if there’s ever been an issue.”

The Mexican takes a traditional approach to Mexican food preparation while delivering a modern spin by featuring uniquely Australian recipes and sourcing an array of fresh local Queensland ingredients.
